Detail of outcome

The government has published its response to the call for evidence seeking views on orbital liability limits and alternatives to traditional third-party liability insurance issued in October 2021.

The government committed to issue a call for evidence in the National Space Strategy so that it can gather evidence on the current approach to setting liability limits, obtain views on alternative methodologies for setting revised liability limits and also seek views on possible alternatives to the current provision of third-party liability insurance for orbital operations, to assist in formulating the policy on these areas.

The call for evidence response sets out a series of recommendations on these policy areas, as well as others covered by the wider review of insurance and liability matters raised in response to the consultation on the draft Space Industry Regulations issued in October 2020.

Work is underway across government and with the UK space sector, academia and insurers to develop formal proposals for consultation in early 2023.

Government will be extending the deadline for responses to the Call for Evidence on Orbital Liability and Insurance approaches from the 3 December 2021 to 7 January 2022.
