Living in Slovenia

Information for British citizens moving to or living in SloveniaSlovenia, need to know, including guidance on residency, healthcare and driving.

This guide sets out essential information for British citizens about moving to or living in Slovenia. Read about how our embassy in Ljubljana can help.

If you were living in Slovenia before 1 January 2021

Some parts of this guide only apply if you werehave been legally living in Slovenia since before 1 January 2021. TheseYou areshould indicatedread withthis sub-headings.in addition to the rest of the guidance in each section.

Visas and residency

You must tell the UK government offices that deal with your benefits, pension and tax if you are moving or retiring abroad.

Check the entry requirements for Slovenia and read the Slovene government’s guidance on entering Slovenia.

You should apply for a residence permit as a third country national. A third country national is someone who does not have EU, EEA or Swiss nationality.

Your local town hall (‘upravna enota’) deals with all residence matters. By law, they must provide services in Slovene. If you weredo legallynot speak Slovene you may need an interpreter. After you have held temporary residency in Slovenia for 5 years, you can apply to your upravna enota for a permanent resident certificate (‘Potrdilo o Stalnem Bivanju’).

Visas and residency if you were living in Slovenia before 1 January 2021

If you needapplied tofor applyyour fornew biometric residence permit by 31 December 2021, your rights are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement pending a decision on your application. You should continue the process to get your new biometric residence permit.card Youif mustyou applydo fornot thishave permitit beforeyet. In the meantime your currentcertificate residencyof documentapplication expires,(a orletter beforeyou 31should Decemberhave 2021,received whicheverwhen comesyou first.applied) is proof of your status in Slovenia. If you have not had a response to your application you should contact your upravna enota.

ApplyWhen for your new biometric residence permit expires, you must renew it at your ‘upravna enota’.

Appeal process

If your application is refused, you will be told how to appeal in your notification letter. If you need a lawyer but cannot afford to pay for one, contact your local town hallhall’s (‘upravnaresident enota’).legal Youadviser for information.

If your appeal is rejected, you may needbe able to bookapply anfor appointment.a residency visa as a third country national. Alternatively, you may be able to apply for a long term tourist visa.

Nationals of certain non-EU countries may need a visa before travel. The Slovene authorities should issue family reunion visas free of charge.

Passports and travel

Coronavirus travel restrictions may affect travel to and from Slovenia.

You can apply for or renew your British passport infrom Slovenia.

Check the Slovenia travel advice for Slovenia for passport validity requirements.

Always carry your passport when travelling within the Schengen area. If you have citizenship of an EU /or European Free Trade AreaAssociation (EFTA) country, in addition to your British citizenship, you should enter and leave Slovenia using your EU /or EFTA passport.

If you stay in Slovenia with a Slovene residence permit or long stay visa, this time does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If you visit other Schengen area countries outside Slovenia, make sure you do not exceed the visa-free 90 days in any 180-day period. You are responsible for counting how long you stay under the Schengen visa waiver, and you must comply with its conditions.

Different rules apply to EU countries that are not part of the Schengen area. Check each country’s travel advice page for information on entry requirements.

If you were living in Slovenia before 1 January 2021

When you travel, especially within the Schengen area, carry your residence document (‘dovoljenje za začasno prebivanje’ or ‘dovoljenje za stalno prebivanje’) or frontier worker permit issued under the Withdrawal Agreement, in addition to your valid passport.

You must proactively show your residence document, or other evidence of residence status, if you are asked to show your passport at border control. If you have applied for, but not yet received, your residence document, carryshow your certificate of application.

If you cannot prove that you are a resident in Slovenia, you may be asked additional questions at the border to enter the SchengenEU. area,Your and your passport may be stamped on entry and exit. This will not affect your rights in Slovenia.

Moving to Slovenia

    Driving in Slovenia

    If you arelive resident in Slovenia, you must exchange your UK driving licence for a Slovene one.

    To exchange your UK driving licence you will need:

    • your current driving licence
    • a valid medical certificate
    • a passport photo
    • proof you are a habitual resident in Slovenia
    • proof that you were resident in the UK when your UK driving licence was issued. The British Embassy has produced a letter which clarifies that UK driving licences are only issued to UK residents. Contact us if you require a copy

    Driving outside Slovenia with a Slovene licence

    Voting

    If you are registered as a permanent resident (‘Potrdilo o Stalnem Bivanju’) in Slovenia you can vote in local elections. You cannot stand in local elections or vote in European Parliament elections.

    You may be able to vote in some UK elections. You can:

    If your child is born in Slovenia, you willcan register the birth with the UK authorities in addition to registering locally. If your child has British nationality, you do not need to register the birth abroadwith the UK authorities to apply for a British passport.

    Pets

    If you have a pet passport issued by Slovenia or another EU member state, you can use it to travel with your pet to Great Britain and elsewhere in the EU. Ensure that your pet’s rabies vaccinations are up-to-date before you travel. Vets in Great Britain cannot enter rabies vaccination details in non-UK issued pet passports.

    A GB-issued EU pet passport is not valid for travel to the EU or Northern Ireland. YouSpeak should speak to your vet before you travel to get the necessary pet travel documents and ensure you’reyou compliantcomply with the EU Petpet Traveltravel Regulations.regulations.

    Returning to the UK

    To move your pension to the UK, contact the International Pension Centre.

    If you get healthcare in Slovenia through the S1 form, you must contact the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 (0)191 218 1999 to make sure your S1 is cancelled at the right time.
