River Thames: restrictions and closures

Navigation on the River Thames may be restricted or closed in certain areas. Find out where and when these restrictions and closures are.

Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency, some of our services will be restricted until further notice.

Thursday 17 March 2022 to late September 2022 Godstow reach Reconstruction and replacement of Godstow Trout Weir 2022: there will be considerable disruption during construction works for the replacement of the trout weir in the Godstow reach.
Wednesday 20 April 2022 6am to 10am and Wednesday 1 June 2022 6am to 9am Clifton reach Refurbishment of overhead power line route Cowley to Didcot 2022: the river will be closed between Clifton and Culham Lock during the stated dates and times.
Wednesday 11 May 2022 6am to 3pm Shepperton reach Chertsey Meads essential works 2022: the river will be closed to all traffic between Chertsey Meads Marine Boat Hire and Ryepeck Meadows.
Wednesday 1 June to Monday 6 June Forbury Loop Reading Water Fest 2022: the Forbury Loop on the River Kennet in Reading will be closed to all boats other than those participating in Reading Water Fest.

Monday 28 March to Monday 13 June 2022 Henley reach Henley Royal Regatta 2022 Course Construction: all boats travelling downstream should navigate on the left, Berkshire/Remenham side of the river within the regatta course. All boats travelling upstream upstream should navigate on the right, Buckinghamshire/Fawley Court side of the river.
Sunday 24 April 2022 9am to 6pmIffley reach Oxford City Bumps 2022: mooring is prohibited between Iffley Lock and Longbridges on the west, towpath side of the river on the day of racing from 7am tro 7pm.

Spring 2022 Godstow Lock Godstow Weir B replacement project: passage through Godstow Reach will be restricted at times during Spring 2022. This will be while we build our new weir and remove the old one.
Saturday 14 May 2022 7am to 8pm Teddington reach Thames Ditton Regatta 2022: the navigation channel will be on the right hand, Hampton Court side of the river.
Sunday 15 May 2022 8am to 5:30pm Bray reach Maidenhead Junior Regatta 2022: the navigation channel will be on the Taplow, towpath, right hand side of the river.
Monday 16 May to Friday 20 May 2022 9:30am to 7:30pm Henley reach MGM Filming 2022: during the stated dates and times no boats can navigate within the regatta course. The navigation channel for river traffic will be on the Buckinghamshire bank/Fawley Court side of the river.
Saturday 21 May 2022 8am to 6pm Sunbury reach Walton and Weybridge Regatta 2022: the navigation channel will be on the Middlesex, right hand side of the river.

Planned lock closures: updated 23 March 2022

The Environment Agency carries out a programme of works on the River Thames every year between October and the end of March. This results in the closure of a number of locks sometimes for relatively long periods.

The Environment Agency publishes the first issue of the programme in August each year. This is so that river users can plan their winter cruising and boat movements well in advance.

This programme of work is subject to change, due to weather and other circumstances. Revised issues of the programme of works are published throughout the winter, so river users can keep up to date. To receive this information, sign up to the email update service.

The 2021 to 2022 investment programme lock closures commence in November 2021. Details below:

When Where What’s happening
4 January 2022 to 31 March 2022 Cookham Lock Refurbishing lock sluices and replacing the lock chamber vertical rubbing timbers.
17 January 2022 - 1 April 2022 Bray Lock Replacement of lock chamber rubbing fenders, undertaking partial lock side resurfacing and making modifications to lock gates.
31 January 2022 to 13 April 2022 Rushey Lock Reconstruction of chamber stairwells to incorporate a recessed egress ladder, replacement of some lock chamber fenders and undertaking partial lock side resurfacing.
31 January 2022 to 31 March 2022 Penton Hook Lock Reconstruction of lock gate anchor points, undertaking partial lock side resurfacing and improving the emergency access to the upstream breakwater structure.
4 February 2022 to 7 April 2022 Blakes Lock Resurfacing the existing head landing path and refurbishing the lock head bullnoses. Canoe portage construction will now commence in April 2022 and this work will not require the lock to be closed.
17 February 2022 to 1 April 2022 Goring Lock Replacement of head landing timber fenders will be complete on 1 April 2022. All other programmed refurbishment works that do not affect the operation of the lock will be delivered during financial year 2022/23.
