Academies budget forecast return

The academies budget forecast return (BFR) is now live. The deadline for the BFR to be submitted is 26 July 2022. To access the form use the link below:

The BFR online form will not be available from 5pm on Friday 17 June until 5pm on Sunday 19 June due to maintenance.

Academies budget forecast return background

There will now only be a single budget forecast return (BFR). Academy trusts are no longer required to submit a separate budget forecast return outturn. The outturn information is now permanently included within the budget forecast return. This covers:

  • Sep 20 to Mar 21 and Apr 21 to Aug 21 (part pre-populated from previous BFR return)
  • Sep 21 to Mar 22 and Apr 22 to Aug 22
  • Sep 22 to Mar 23 and Apr 23 to Aug 23
  • Summary forecasts for Sep 23 to Aug 24
  • Summary forecasts for Sep 24 to Aug 25

Guide for the using the academies budget forecast online form

The BFR will go live on 21 June 2022 and will have a deadline for submission of 26 July 2022.

There are 2 versions of the Excel workbook to help you prepare your BFR, these both include the new section for academy trusts with revenue balances of 20% or more as at August 2022:

  • a single-page version
  • a multi-page version structured to look like the online form

Both versions have the same questions and validations contained within the online form.

In-year academy transfers

Your BFR return must reflect any academies transferring in or out of your trust. The table below shows what you need to include in your BFR based on the month of transfer:

Month of transfer Academy leaving a trust Academy joining a trust
September 2021 No action required BFR to include actuals and forecasts for the academy joining the trust
October 2021 to April 2022 BFR to include actuals up to the point of transfer and remove from that point onwards BFR to include actuals and forecasts from the date of transfer
May 2022to August 2022 BFR to include actuals to the point of transferring and remove forecasts from then on BFR include forecasts from the point of transfer
September 2022 onwards BFR to include actuals and forecasts up to the point of transfer and remove forecasts from then on BFR to include forecasts from September 2022 onwards

Access to your BFR online form

The budget forecast return online form uses the IDAMS registration service. Academy trusts must be registered and set up to use the service before they can access the form. Please read this guide on how to register and set up the online forms for the BFR.

  1. The online form for the academies budget forecast return is now live. The deadline to complete and submit the return is 26 July 2022.

  24. We have updated the excel workbook as we had been informed that a formula wasn't working properly. We have corrected and updated this version of the workbook.
