Background
The Medical Radionuclide Innovation Programme was launched by the Chief Scientific Officer, Paul Monks, at a visit to the Hull Molecular Imaging Centre on the 8 December 2022.
The Programme will encourage innovation in technologies and techniques that could support access to radionuclides and increase our national resilience against global shortages.
It has been designed around 3 core workstreams:
1. Medical Radionuclide Landscape Assessment and Scenario Analysis - to build the evidence government requires to understand future supply and demand in the UK, informing future decisions on how to best safeguard the UK’s medical radionuclide supply.
- Phase 1, which included an assessment of the medical radionuclide landscape, concluded in May 2023
- Phase 2, which will focus on how future supply and demand could be forecasted, will commence later this financial year
2. Nuclear Material Access – DESNZ is working with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and their site licensedlicenced companies to better understand whether there are materials of value held within the UK Radioactive ‘Waste’ inventory and how accessible / useful they are for medical purposes.
3. Innovation Project Workstream – 10an innovationup projectsto are£4 beingmillion deliveredfund underto thissupport workstream.the development of technologies that could enable improved access to medical radionuclides in the future.
