Recognition of foreign marriage and civil partnership letters

Letters explaining how foreign marriages and civil partnerships are recognised in the UK. Sometimes called information notes.

British embassies, high commissions and consulates cannot confirm the validity of a foreign marriage or civil partnership in the UK.

If you’re asked by local authorities to provide proof of this, download the relevant letter. You can get a signed and stamped version of a letter, which costs £50.

If you’re asked to provide proof of the validity of a foreign marriage, download the relevant letter. If your country or territory is not listed use the ‘All countries and territories’ letter.
