Requirements

• excavate the full width of the gateway by the full length ofwhich the gate (whenopens it is open into the field when it is at 90 degrees)degrees
• excavate to a minimum depth of at150mm least 150 millimetres (mm) or until there’sthere is a naturally occurring hard surface
• remove the excavated soil from the gateway area and spread it on the verges of the field tracktrack, (allowingallowing for drainage)drainage
• overlay the excavated area with a geotextile membrane
• fillmembrane, thethen excavatedfill area with aggregate (hardcore)(hard core) to a minimum consolidated depth of at150mm

Materials and area of resurfacing

When carrying out the work:

• the area you’llto resurfacebe resurfaced should be appropriate for the size of the gateway and the type of traffic that’llthat will move through it
• compact each layer of hard core well down before adding another layer, making sure each layer is 150mmno ormore lessthan 150mm thick
• get advice should be taken from the Environment Agency (EA) if you’ll be using road planings, waste or recycled materials will be used as hardcorehard core

Biodiversity

This item has been identified as being beneficial for biodiversity. All Countryside Stewardship habitat creation, restoration and management options are of great significance for biodiversity recovery, as are the wide range of arable options in the scheme. Capital items and supplements can support this habitat work depending on the holding’s situation and potential.

The connectivity of habitats is also very important and habitat options should be linked wherever possible. Better connectivity will allow wildlife to move/colonise freely to access water, food, shelter and breeding habitat, and will allow natural communities of both animals and plants to adapt in response to environmental and climate change.
