Requirements you must meet if you are a childminder and registered with Ofsted on the compulsory part of the Childcare Register.

Update history

The Department for Education updated the general childcare register regulations on 1 September 2026. The requirements prevent banned dog breeds (to which section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 applies, including the XL Bully type) being kept or present in childcare settings. We have amended our guidance in line with this update.

Reorganised all training requirements under one single heading for clarity.

Updated to include a new childcare provider type, ‘childminders without domestic premises’, which was introduced by the Department for Education’s EYFS framework on 1 November 2024. We have also clarified that anyone aged 16 or over living on the “domestic premises” where childcare takes place must have an enhanced DBS check. Finally, we updated the amount of time a childminder can provide childcare on non-domestic premises, under ‘Looking after children on non-domestic premises’.
