Investigation into Google’s ‘Privacy Sandbox’ browser changes
Detail of outcome
On 13 June 2025, the CMA published a notice of intention to release the Commitments previously accepted by the CMA in respect of Google’s Privacy Sandbox Proposals and invited representations from interested third parties.
The CMA has carefully considered the responses to the consultation. The CMA remains of the view that it has reasonable grounds for believing that its competition concerns no longer arise and that it is appropriate to release the Commitments. Therefore, on 17 October 2025, the CMA decided to release the Privacy Sandbox Commitments.
Detail of feedback received
The CMA received 15 responses to the consultation.
The CMA’s decision to release the Commitments includes a summary of these responses.
Original consultation
Consultation description
The CMA had competition concerns regarding Google’s Privacy Sandbox proposals and previously accepted Commitments offered by Google to address these. Google has since announced that it no longer plans to block third-party cookies in general browsing in Chrome, or prompt users to decide if they want to do this.
The CMA now believes the Commitments are no longer necessary and so is consulting before taking a decision on whether to release them.
