CNC officers praised after safely escorting MOX shipment to Japan

Specialist officers safely escorted MOX fuel from Europe to Asia, earning praise for their maritime security and showcasing strong global nuclear partnerships.

Once again specialist officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) Strategic Escort Group (SEG) have been praised after completing a major international operational deployment, ensuring the secure transit of nuclear material to from France to Japan.

The officers were deployed throughout the voyage on board the Pacific Heron and Pacific Egret. They were met in Japan by Chief Constable Simon Chesterman, who was hosted by Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) and the Japanese at the unloading of the nuclear material, he was able to personally thank the SEG officers for their outstanding professionalism whilst deployed in a protracted and complex operation at sea.

The two vessels arrived safely in Japan, completing the delivery of 32 Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies to the Takahama Nuclear Power Station.

Operated by Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (PNTL), part of NTS, the purpose-built vessels are among the most advanced in the world for transporting nuclear materials. Over the past 50 years, PNTL has maintained a flawless nuclear safety and security record, supported by expert nuclear mariners and specialist armed policing provided by CNC officers.

Chief Constable Chesterman highlighted SEG’s contribution to the successful operation: “Our officers deliver unique specialist armed policing to complex maritime missions. Their work ensures the security of the material as it is travels across the World. I am immensely proud of their outstanding capabilities and performance.”

The successful completion of the shipment once again demonstrates the CNC’s critical role in global security and the strength of long-standing partnerships across the international nuclear sector.
