Changes to driving test booking rules in 2026

Booking your car driving test
From later in spring 2026, you will beneed allowed to book your owncar driving test –yourself youron GOV.UK. Your driving instructor will not be able to book it for you.
You should:
- only book at a test centre you intend to use - you will only be able to move your test to nearby centres
- only book when your driving instructor says you’re ready - speak to your driving instructor first
- use your driving instructor’s reference number when you book - this will make sure your instructor does not get double-booked
- choose a date you realistically expect to be ready by - you will only be allowed to make

Making changes to your car driving test

From later in spring 2026, you will only be able to move your test to centres near to where you originally booked
Only use your limited changes for genuine needs or emergencies.
What will count as changes
These things each count as a change:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping your appointment with another learner driver who already has a test booked
If you need to make more changes
If you need to make more changes after you have used your 2 changes, you will have to cancel your test and rebookbook it.a new one.
You’llYou will get a full refund if you givedo it at least 10 full working days’ notice.before the test date.
How driving instructors can manage their availability
Driving instructors willcan still be able to use the online service to manage when they are available to take their pupils for driving tests.
They can set:
- morning and afternoon hours they are available for each day of the week
- one-off times they are unavailable - for example, when they are on holiday
- how long (in minutes) they need between one test ending and the next one starting
This means that if a learner driver adds their driving instructor’s personal reference number to their booking, the booking system will automatically check if their instructor is available.
What will happen next
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will contact you nearerusing the timeemail address you gave when you booked your test to tell you what to do.

Under the ‘How many times you can change your test’ section, added a sentence to confirm that if DVSA changes your test (for example, due to bad weather), you will be reset to having 2 changes available again.

Added information about 2 changes to car driving test booking rules coming into effect in spring 2026. From 12 May 2026, it will be against the law for anyone other than the learner driver to book, change or cancel a car driving test, including driving instructors and third-party services. From 9 June 2026, learner drivers will only be able to move their test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where their test is booked. Also added a Welsh translation of the page.
