Details

This prison service order (PSO) includes guidance for prison staff on particular aspects of the management and care of unconvicted, unsentenced and civil prisoners. These groups of prisoners have a number of rights, privileges and needs which differ from convicted and sentenced prisoners.

It covers:

  • the treatment and rights of unconvicted prisoners, including visiting rights, time in the open air, and the right to vote
  • the effects of conviction on unsentenced prisoners
  • the treatment and rights of civil prisoners, including special considerations depending on their offence

It also contains a full definition of unconvicted, unsentenced and civil prisoners and a list of their rights and privileges.

This is a current PSO. It came into effect on 10 February 2003 and was last updated on 27 January 2020.
