This chapter commits the UK and India to strive to ensure their respective environmental laws encourage high levels of environmental protection, and not to waive their environmental laws to encourage bilateral trade or investment. It recognises the right of the UK and India to regulate in pursuit of our ambitious climate and environment goals, such as net zero by 2050.

The environment chapter also reaffirms our mutual commitments to global environmental agreements including the Paris Agreement and 1.5°C temperature goal, commit the UK and India to endeavour to facilitate and promote trade in environmental goods and services and encourage the transition to clean energy, and strengthen co-operation .
