Remediation nears completion in Kincardine after mine subsidence

Works to stabilise the ground beneath Dewar Avenue in Kincardine are nearing completion, a year after subsidence caused by old coal mine workings was discovered.

The incident, in Fife, Scotland, led to 6 homes being demolished and the local community centre closing.

Following this, a 4-month programme began in May 2026 involved injecting grout and gravel directly into the former mine workings to prevent further ground movement.

Monitoring had identified slow, ongoing movement within the fenced-off area where the properties previously stood.

The Mining Remediation Authority has confirmed that no movement has been detected beyond this area, outside of normal seasonal variation.

Ross Martin, project manager at the Mining Remediation Authority, said:

Working on a project like this, in a tight-knit community like Kincardine, you feel the weight of responsibility.

People have had their lives disrupted, and they want answers and action.

Incidents of this nature require careful and thorough investigation before any remediation can safely begin, as a full picture of underground ground conditions must be established before any intervention takes place

We’re really proud of the work the team has done to respond carefully, communicate openly and make sure we’re doing right by the residents here.

Monitoring of Dewar Avenue, the community centre and the surrounding area will continue until at least spring 2027 to give residents ongoing reassurance and inform decisions on the long-term future of the site. We will provide further community updates as work progresses.
