SIA marks National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism
A joint statement from Mike Cunningham CBE, QPM, SIA Chair, and Michelle Russell, SIA Chief Executive, on National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism.
Today (21 August 2026), we stand in solidarity with the rest of the United Kingdom to observe the inaugural National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism.
On the UK’s first National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism, as the UK security regulator, we pause to honour those who have lost their lives, and the courage and resilience of those who have suffered enduring physical or psychological harm, and the families whose lives have been forever altered by acts of terrorism.
The introduction of this National Day follows years of dedicated campaigning by survivors and bereaved families to ensure the victims’ stories are heard. It is their voices and determination that have driven this change, as well as the forthcoming Martyn’s Law, which will reinforce protective security and preparedness in premises and events across the UK.
We will continue to work together with premises, events, policing and law enforcement colleagues, national and local government, private security, and the public, to strengthen UK resilience and preparedness against acts of terrorism.
Today, we remember those whose lives have been lost. We celebrate the strength of those who survived and reaffirm our absolute commitment to stand together with them, united against terrorism.
