Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain publish 2025-26 annual report

The report details the new strategic objectives of the Traffic Commissioners from 2026-2029 and evaluates the current state of the industry.

Our aims remain as: 

• To deliver a modern and effective operator licensing regime that ensures operators are fit to hold a licence whilst minimising the regulatory burden on the compliant.
• To promote and develop a safe road transport industry, which delivers compliance, fair competition and protects the environment.

The report includes a consideration of the future of the Traffic Commissioners and:

• Driver Welfare
• Road Safety Strategy
• Smarter regulation

There is also discussion of Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations PSVAR and the Bus Open Data Service (BODS) alongside AI and maintenance recognition schemes.

A spokesperson, on behalf of the Traffic Commissioners, explained that:

“Approaching the 100th anniversary of the Traffic Commissioners is an opportunity to consider how this regulatory system continues to serve the public interest. Our role is to deliver proportionate, evidence-based decisions that promote road safety and fair competition in both Goods and PSV sectors.

“Without this regulatory system, many issues would only be addressed through criminal proceedings after harm has occurred. Through specialist regulation and early intervention, Traffic Commissioners play a crucial role in maintaining standards and preventing unsafe operators and drivers from putting other road users at risk.”

The Annual Report also contains statistics describing the licensing and regulatory activities. The data recognises the achievements of the commissioners and their support during the year.
