Details

Ministry of Justice (MOJ) information is kept for three reasons:

  • Historical reasons: certain information will form MoJ’s archive - documenting what happened and why. This usually includes important decisions about the organisation, major decisions of policy, primary legislation, samples of court and prison records, and often the information created by or around senior figures in the department.

  • Statutory reasons: MOJ is required to keep certain pieces of information for specified periods of time by law - such as HR records, information about your buildings and finance records.

  • Personal or team reference, or essential business use: MOJ needs to refer to it in the future to do its job effectively.

The What to Keep guide identifies what a record is, where to save it and when it can be deleted.
