Claim a refund of Income Tax deducted from savings and investments
Apply for a repayment of tax on your savings interest using form R40 if you do not complete a Self Assessment tax return.
If you’re registered for Self Assessment, apply for a repayment on your Self Assessment tax return.
If you meet any of the Self Assessment criteria, you must complete a tax return. Do not submit form R40 for repayment.
If you (or the person you’re claiming for) live abroad, apply for a repayment using form R43.
Before you start
The time limit for applying is 4 years after the end of the tax year you are claiming for. You need to submit a separate application for each tax year.
To submit an application on behalf of someone else, you must use the postal form. If you are applying on behalf of a minor, you need to include their residential address on the form.

- sign in with your Government Gateway user ID and password (if you do not have a user ID, you can create one when you first try to sign in)
- use your email address to get a confirmation code that you can use to sign in
You will get a reference number that you can use to track the progress of your claim.
