Change description : 2026-02-06 15:42:00: Added information to explain you can get security codes to a UK mobile phone number or authenticator app to sign in. [Guidance and regulation]
You can only change your number to a UK mobile phone number.
If you’ve added a phone number as a back-up method, you can remove it and add a new phone number.
If you’ve lost access to your phone
If you’ve lost access to your phone number or you’ve changed it, you can use your back-up method (another UK phone number or authenticator app) if you’ve added one.
If you do not have a back-up method, check if you can change how you get security codes:
If you’re told you can change how you get security codes, you’ll need to prove your identity using the GOV.UK ID Check app. This is because we need to know it’s you and helps to keep your GOV.UK One Login safe.
We’ll ask some questions to make sure you can use the GOV.UK ID Check app. Then we’ll tell you how to download and use the app to prove your identity.
You can then choose how you want to get security codes. You can get codes by text message to your UK mobile phone number or from an authenticator app.
Changing how you get security codes will remove your previous default and back-up method, if you’ve set one up.
Under Your sign in details, find the row for Email and select Change email address.
Enter your password and select Continue.
Enter a new email address and select Continue.
Check your email for a security code.
Enter the security code and select Continue.
Use an authenticator app to get security codes
An authenticator app creates a security code that you enter when you sign in to your GOV.UK One Login. This is instead of getting a code by text message.
You can use an authenticator app on your smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.
If you get codes by text message, you can change to using an authenticator app instead. To do this:
Download an authenticator app from your app store or search online for one that you can use on your computer. You can use any authenticator app.
