Road safety statistics: topic summaries and ad-hoc reports

The annual reported road casualties publication now consists of a series of topic-based chapters covering different aspects of road safety statistics. In many cases, these chapters provide an overview of a topic, with additional detail available in the factsheets and analysis linked below.

Overall casualties, injury severity and collision outcomes

Latest casualty numbers and trends are presented in the overall casualties by severity chapter of the annual publication, with latest annual data for monitoring road safety strategy targets and indicators in the Safety Performance Indicators chapter. Further analysis, considering other datasets includes:

• Injury severity and type from injury-based reporting systems, data to 2024 - from 2025, figures are included in the main report
• Analysis of hospital data on road casualties including serious e-scooter casualties, and feasibility studies linking STATS19 and trauma data and STATS19 and hospital admissions and ambulance service data
• Linking police and fire service data on road casualties, a feasibility study

Road user type, including vulnerable road users

High-level statistics on road users by type are included in the road user type chapter of the annual report. The vehicles chapter includes an analysis of the risk to other road users by type. More detailed analysis for vulnerable road users is available in factsheets covering:

An overview of casualties in collisions by age and sex is available in the casualty demographics chapter, with the following more detailed analysis available:

Vehicles and drivers, including driving for work

A summary of vehicles involved in collisions is provided in the vehicles chapter. The risk behaviours and circumstances provides an overview of journey purpose of drivers involved in collisions. The estimated number of work-related collisions is available as a separate analysis:

Roads and geography

Casualty numbers and rates for different road types and different levels of geography are summarised in chapters of the publication. More detailed figures by area are available via the interactive data tools.

We are exploring work to match or ‘snap’ collisions to a road network, and a feasibility study has been published on which any feedback is welcome.

Risk behaviours including ‘fatal four’

An overview of the main risk behaviours in collisions, including the ‘fatal four’ factors (speed, drink and drugs, mobile phone use and seatbelt non-wearing) is given in the risk behaviours and circumstances chapter. Further detailed analysis and related statistics, including prevalence of risk behaviours among drivers, includes:

Road safety factors - why collisions happen

The road safety factors chapter of the publication provides an overview of why collisions happen, as far as this is available within STATS19. Further detailed analysis includes:

• Road safety factors - an initial analysis of the potential impact on the published statistics of the transition to the new road safety factors, based on 2023 data
• ‘Fatal 4’ behaviours: speed, alcohol, drugs, seatbelts and mobile devices presented using the new road safety factors classification,data for 2004 and 2025. Previous analysis based on data to 2023 is also available.
