HMCTS operational summary for week commencing Monday 5 September 2022

  • Updated: During the industrial action being taken by some members of the criminal bar in dispute with the government, local HMCTS teams continue to list cases as directed by the judiciary. Local court staff are taking all reasonable steps possible to ensure listed cases can be effective, making provision for appropriate courtrooms, staff and facilities as necessary. Listing teams continue to work closely with local partners and stakeholders to minimise disruption wherever possible, and liaise with these groups to ensure judges have the information they need to best prioritise outstanding cases. We are very grateful for the continued support of all criminal justice partners in continuing to operate our criminal courts.
  • Updated: Barristers, solicitors and CILEX practitioners with cross-examination expertise and vulnerable witness and advocacy training are invited to register for court appointed cross-examination work in family and civil proceedings. New Domestic Abuse Act 2021 measures will prohibit alleged perpetrators of domestic abuse and their victims from cross-examining each other, with the court appointing legal practitioners in place of the prohibited parties. Crime

  • Updated: Registration is now open for our live webinar on the introduction of the Common Platform case management system to criminal courts, and our plans for further implementation. The event panel will also be answering your questions on the service. The webinar will take place between 1pm and 2pm on Tuesday 27 September 2022.
  • Reminder: We’re implementing the Common Platform case management system at more criminal courts in England in the coming months. See the schedule showing when courts will go live with the system.
  • Reminder: Defence professionals can find step-by-step instructions on how to use Common Platform on GOV.UK. You can also watch our demonstration video to see how it works.
  • Reminder: We’re hosting a number of drop-in support sessions for defence professionals. The sessions will aim to answer defence solicitors and barristers queries who use Common Platform. Registration is now open for sessions taking place between 9am and 10am on Wednesday 14 September 2022 and Monday 19 September 2022.
  • Reminder: Criminal defence representatives should include the words “BAR ACTION” in the subject line of any email to the court about affected cases, so we can make the relevant judge aware as quickly as possible.

Civil

  • Updated: The work of Bexleyheath Social Security and Child Support Tribunal is moving into courtroom 4 at Bexley Magistrates’ Court and cases will be listed at the court from Monday September 5 2022. Work has taken place over the summer months to prepare courtroom 4 for this purpose.
