HMCTS operational summary for week commencing Monday 916 October 2023

General

  • Update: Deputy CEO Paul Harris addressed the Civil Court Users Association (CCUA) annual conference this week. He highlighted the importance of working with organisations like the CCUA to continue the vital work of modernising the justice system and delivering improved services.
  • Update: We have taken the decision to temporarily close Hull Combined Court until Tuesday 17 October 2023, while work continues to treat the entire building after fleas were found in some areas earlier in the week. Any hearings impacted will be re-scheduled at the earliest opportunity.
  • Reminder: We’ve jointly published a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which formalises the shared risk and responsibility between HMCTS and HMPPS during the ‘virtual custody’ of prisoners involved in remote hearings on the Video Hearing Service. It also covers preceding private consultations with legal representatives.
  • Update:Reminder: HMCTS use Cloud Video Platform (CVP) and the Video Hearings Service to facilitate remote hearings. If you receive a letter confirming that your hearing will take place on the Video Hearings Service an email will follow with more information and your log in details. Please read and follow the guidance, including to sign into your hearing 30 minutes before it’s due to begin to ensure that you are able to access the service.

Crime

Open days

  • Reminder: Reading Crown Court is holding an open day on Saturday 14 October 2023 from 10am to 2:30pm. All ages are welcome, and visitors will be able to sit in on mock trials, ask questions to judges, tour the courtrooms and cells, have their fingerprints taken for fun and much more. The event will offer a unique insight into the hard work that goes on behind the scenes and provide the local community with an understanding of the inner workings of the criminal court. Common Platform

  • Update: Over 500,000 cases have now been accepted onto Common Platform following on from the platform going live in all magistrates’ and Crown Courts in England and Wales. Nick Goodwin, HMCTS Chief Executive said “This achievement is a real testament to the hard work and unfailing dedication of our colleagues and partners in every region”.
